We all have this question on our minds at one point or another during our writing endeavors. Here is a place to discuss and hash out plots, people, motivations, and the like.
re·al·is·tic [ree-uh-lis-tik] adjective 1. interested in, concerned with, or based on what is real or practical: a realistic estimate of costs; a realistic planner. 2. pertaining to, characterized by, or given to the representation in literature or art of things as they really are: a realistic novel. 3. resembling or simulating real life: a duck hunter skilled at making realistic decoys. 4. Philosophy . of or pertaining to realists or realism.(courtesy of dictionary.com)

This seemed like the right place to ask this question.
I have a guy (in his late 20s or early 30s) who is a police/FBI type person. He has a brother a little bit younger than him who he was always really close to. He defended him from bullies in school and stuff when they were kids. The guy's working on a robbery case with some other people, and they find out that the robber is the guy's brother. The guy ends up having to kill his own brother, to save an innocent person that he (the brother) was about to kill. What do you think would be a realistic way for the guy to react? Do you think it would be too extreme to have him go into shock?
I just realized that it sounds really depressing, but that's not the whole story.

If he kills him accidentally, sure. I don't see myself killing my brother for any reason at all. I mean, I'd try to talk him out of it or maybe knock him out or something, but kill him outright? Nope.
That's just me, though.
EDIT: Now that I think of it, if you milked his character struggle enough or had him do it on a total impulse, you might be able to get away with him intentionally killing his brother. I'd think it would be hard, but possibly quite fun.

Killing family members is not something that is easy to do in any situation. Personally, I'd have your MC not kill his brother, but have a partner do it or something, and have your character be visibly distraught over it still, despite his brother doing evil things. I mean, if they were as close as you imply, it would be no picnic to kill him. But you will navigate the situation well, I think, no matter what you decide to do.

I think it'd be better to have someone else kill the brother. Maybe the person the brother is threatening is related somehow to your MC's partner, and while MC is trying to convince his brother (maybe unsuccessfully) to not kill the innocent person, the partner shoots him. Just another option.

Or you could ship the guy off to jail under the charge of attempted murder. Which is less harsh.
