"Mine's Sally," she said, "I remember what it's like to not have any brothers. I didn't have any until last year." She smiled. "But now I have nine. Do you have any sisters?"

"Nice to meet you, Sally," Cateri said with a smile, "I don't have any siblings, but my best friend-" she tilted her head across the way, "Has 2 little sisters and a little brother. How old are you?"

"That's cool," Sally said, "I'm almost sixteen. How about you?"

"I'm fifteen. What kind of things do you like to do?" Cateri said, maybe she could make a friend here.

"Hmm," Sally said, "Well, I like to do a lot of things. I do a lot of stuff with my brothers Thomas and George, and my little sister Betty. We talk about...things, and we sometimes do some stuff with my dad's logging business. What do you like to do?"

Claire looked at the two girls next to her, and quickly looked away. A fond half-smile made its way to her lips. Somehow these two girls reminded her of her best friend from the orphanage, Allie, and herself. She didn't know why. She shrugged and figured it was because they were both girls. Somehow this thought made her laugh.
James looked over at Claire when she laughed. Luckily, she didn't notice. Good, he thought, she looks like she's starting to enjoy herself. He didn't ask her why she had laughed, for fear that she would retreat into her sullen mood. It was hard trying to make friends with her, and even harder to introduce her to Jesus. That, he figured, he would try to let her do on her own. This girl was a mystery to him, but he was determined that she should learn to enjoy life. He knew that would be hard, since she had spent her whole life in an orphanage where they didn't get enough to eat and were quite frequently abused, but that, he reasoned, gave him all the more reason to try.

Cateri said with a smile, "I don't really do much, just mess around on piano and write poems when I can." And spend half the day on the computer looking for that information She shrugged her shoulders and tried to think of other things to talk about. She knew nothing about logging. She heard the girl next to her laugh and wondered if it was something she did.

Claire could feel the girl next to her's eyes on her and kept her gaze fixed ahead, but inwardly cringed as she felt her face go hot. Oh please please please don't show your embarrassment, she told herself. She hoped the girl would look away and not pay any more attention to her. And yet, at the same time, she hoped that the girl would talk to her, too. She was confused by these feelings. She'd never felt in need for companionship before - she'd always had Allie, at any time, so she hadn't been lonely before. And when James' family took her in, they treated her as if they'd known her all their lives, so she hadn't had a choice but to at least try to remain civil, if not a little friendly at times. But this was the first time she'd been around girls her own age for a while.

this is awkward is all Cateri could think at the moment. She smiled and decided to try and talk to the girl, "Um..Hello" Her cheeks started burning the way they always do when she tries to talk to someone new. If she wanted to be something in the world she needed to be able to talk to people, not shy away from it.

Claire looked at the girl. She actually looked as embarrassed as Claire felt! She decided that the girl looked friendly enough, and risked a tentative, "Hi." The other girl gave a small smile but didn't say anything. What am I doing?! Claire asked herself furiously, Claire Whatever-Your-Last-Name-Is, you do NOT get shy! You were queen of the orphanage! Don't let an ordinary girl bring you down to the status of 5-year-old! She tossed her dark blonde hair and squared her shoulders resolutely, if I have to be here at all, I can at least talk to someone. "So, what's your name? And yours," she asked, glancing at the other girl.

"My name is Cateri," she said, trying not to sound as nervous as she was feeling.

"I'm Sally," she said cheerfully. She loved meeting new people! "What's your name? Do you like the circus?"

"My name's Claire," Claire tipped her head to the side thoughtfully. "I don't know. I've never been to the circus before. Right now it's pretty boring. This jerk," she smiled slightly as she elbowed James in the shoulder, showing that she didn't mean it, "dragged me here against my will. He seems to think sitting on these cold, hard bleachers in a stuffy tent is the perfect picture of fun."
"It's going to start in a few minutes! Then the fun will begin," James protested. He was amazed - this was the first time Claire had actually showed willingness to act pleasant!

Sally smiled at the guy Claire was with. "I'm Sally," she said, "What's your name. You remind me of my brother George."
