Names are one of the hardest thing to come up with for writing. Everyone has their own way of finding the right one. Like I go to my shelf of Saints' stories and randomly select one. Then I use the name of the Saint that the book is about. (unless if I am looking for a girl's name and I pick a boy saint-then I re-pick) So if you find yourself stuck with names post a bit about the character here, or just ask for a name and we will be happy to help you come up with one! You can also post your favorite names and how you usually find the right name here as well.

Right now I'm working on a story where characters have names that are usually not used for persons, places, or things, like Has, or Vivid. Any suggestions?

I like the idea of using unconventional names! I used a steampunk name generator for a few name ideas (that, and the baby book.) I think I was playing around with a jewish name before I came up with Lywren. Adeana just...came to me randomly Here's a few "steampunk" names, though technically, they could go with anything. www.steampunkthings.com/steampunk-name-generator/This one I really like, you can put your own name or something close and see what it comes up with. Or just keep inputting what they gave you and it'll change! www.steampunkthings.com/steampunk-name-generator/

Great ideas! Steampunk...so cool. I like to look up the meaning behind names, too. That's how I came up with Bevin's name...I wanted something with a Celtic background. Usually I just know what a character should be named. With my current story the majority of the names were pulled right from the Bible (it's a retelling of David and Mical's love story), so that made it easy.

Names. I love names. Ideally I try to pick names with meanings that relates to the story, or describes the character's personality. I love name meanings. I also love Celtic/Irish names. Couple sites I use are babynames.com and behindthename.com

Sooo...I need help with character names! This is what the book is about so you know what the theme is:
The main characters are twin girls of 15 years of age. It is based in renaissance time and when the girls were only 10 their father was accused of treason and they had to flee the country. He of course was framed. The girls and their father (their mother died at childbirth) have been hiding in the woods outside of the country's capital. The girls have decided it's time to restore their father's name and prove his innocence. But just when things seem to be going well, they are thrown into chaos as they now have to protect their forest hiding place.
And here is a little something about the twins!
Oldest Twin-Very handy with a sword, less planning more action, very humorous, outgoing, facing problems head-on, stubborn, always thinks her way is the best, long brown hair, twinkling light brown/hazel eyes, freckles, 5’7”, knows the woods like the back of her hand. For her I was thinking tree names, or names that feel adventrurous, daring, or brave. Youngest Twin-Very handy with a bow and arrow, clever, likes to plan things out before she acts, prefers to be alone, withdraws into her own world, sometimes timid but overall a very brave person, 5’6”, long brown wavy hair, big dark brown eyes, freckles but not as much as older twin, friends with animals. For her I was thinking bird names, or names that mean peace or clever.
Here are some names I've found but I'm not sold on them. Oldest: Aspen Birch Rowan Cassia Valiant Isra Freya Youngest: Salome Isis Cassiopeia Eve Lark Wren

I need Italian girl names. I was thinking of Chiara, Angelina, or Giana, but I always use those ones. Any other ideas?

Alessandra (Italian form of Alexandra) Dafne (form of Daphne) Dina behindthename.com is a great place to go if you're looking for names from a particular heritage.

Haha! It's funny, because I wanted my main character in the book I'm planning to have a name which meant "Strong", but I couldn't find anything, so I just chose Claire. It seemed like a sensible yet nice name. Then I saw this thread, and checked out the "Behind the Name" website, and looked up "Strong" for meanings, and one of the results was Clare. But Claire was a related name to that. I feel so awesome!

Love love love Behind the Name. At some point, I should dig out my list of potential names and meanings from my bedroom...maybe it would be helpful to somebody. Some are rather outlandish, however.

I'm trying to come up with a name for the heroine in my book I'm plotting. I want it to be kind of fantasy-like but normal sounding too. Here's what I came up with:
Ariadne Melody Juliet Aisling (pronounced Ash-ling, it means dream which I thought appropriate since the book is about dreams)
Have any suggestions? Which of the ones I came up with is your favorite?
